The center’s research lines are broad and complex, the pathologies mentioned above having a high frequency and, despite advances in medicine, still being accompanied by a delayed diagnosis and an influenced quality of life or survival, a fact that underlines and justifies the need for research, information, and education in this field, which represents a real public health problem.
The goal of the translational research center is to facilitate the rapid and efficient transfer of scientific innovations into patient care, thereby improving health outcomes for people with peritoneal and digestive diseases.
- Combining fundamental research techniques, nanotechnology, modern imaging methods and current medical-surgical techniques, the center’s activity aims at the development of support for research in the field (tissue bases; experimental models in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo), of complex molecules (theragnostic nano-bioconjugates), of advanced biomaterials, software/hardware solutions (including AR/AI) and medical-surgical devices to improve diagnostic, screening, therapeutic methods (including surgical, minimally invasive, endoscopic and hybrid techniques), outcomes, survival and the risk/timing of relapse/recurrence of the disease and how this can be mitigated.
- Initiating and supporting information and psychological support programs for patients and their families.
- Educational and professional training activities for the members of the multidisciplinary team who contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of these complex pathologies, with the support of multidisciplinary and “hybrid” activities and treatments (eg: imaging-guided surgery; interventional endoscopy; interventional imaging, etc.)
- Standardization, development and implementation of specific guidelines for these pathologies, disseminated with an educational role through workshops and/or other academic events.
- Implementation and support of transversal links between related fields, including the field of oncology, already implemented in the UBBMed structure.
